Module #3
Doing this week's readings and videos, classroom management was very much the target topic. Chapter 7 focused a lot on behavior, different learning strategies and motivation. The text uses the term reinforcement in a different way than we've normally understood it. The time reward never comes to mind when I was younger thinking of reinforcement. However, if I continue to do something that I wasn't supposed to do my parents reinforced the consequences for the behavior (Pg257).
The two different types of reinforcement talked about in the text talk about are very different to me, However, I do agree with the using a reinforcement schedule to keep students behavior on target. I believe that the praise and ignore approach can definitely be helpful in softer the classroom. There are students who do not care about learning and their motivation is to throw the class off track. I have seen this behavior in my classroom. Those students behavior may form because they don't understand what is being taught, which cause the off-track comments. I always try to bring the students back and praise the students who are contributing well.
I believe that it's very important to create a safe space where students can contribute to their learning. Sometimes students don't get the positive reinforcements at home or the praising. I typically try to show students a different type of behavior plan. My responses to how the students act in class can move them to try harder or to put no effort in at all. Teachers have an amazing responsibility, they should not take it lightly.
Norma, I agree we should have positive reinforcement in our classrooms, because that might encourage students to work even harder. Sometimes students may not get praised for their work at home or school, and should be recognized at times. Teachers have a lot to obtain in the classroom, and should make sure all students feel comfortable in the learning environment.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Norma, teachers can play a significant role in a child's life and it is something we should not take lightly. I also have seen first-hand where students do not receive a lot of support or discipline at home and it shows in their class behavior. As teachers, we can give positive feedback and discipline, but it is important for us to not let standards slip because of a student's home life. I think children nowadays come from a lot less structured home lives and teachers have an opportunity to create a stable, safe environment for the students to engage with others and learn. It is an important role, but I think with constant reflection and a continuous goal to improve, we can all succeed at impacting our students' lives for the better.
ReplyDeleteI agree and think its important to be able to recognize when a child is misbehaving and that there is usually a reason for it. You make a great point that teachers have an amazing responsibility. Creating a safe space for leaning is key.
